Messier marathon with binoculars

Yes, you may run a Messier marathon using just binoculars! Don't grasp your smallest ones, but if you own a 10x60 or bigger you might be very successful! Binoculars are easy to use and ideal for star-hopping. Using my Steiner 15x80 binocular for a marathon in March 2002, I was able to identify 102 Messier objects! All objects, just missing the last rising eight objects in Sagittarius und Capricorn.

I suggest binoculars with a magnification of 12 or more to see the ring nebular in Lyra (M57) and the small Dumbell nebular in Perseus (M76) easily as small disks discernable from the surrounding stars - that's all you need to identify these objects.
